מצב שבו דם אינו מגיע לאחד מחלקי המוח ובשל כך נגרמת הפרעה בתפקוד הגוף, החל מחולשה חולפת ועד תנועות בלתי רצוניות ואבדן הכרה. בטווח הארוך השבץ עלול לגרום לפסיכוזה, לנכות ואף למוות.
